Well, today sure has been interesting. I was awakened by a horrific “boom.” Scared me so badly I was shaking. I grabbed my bathrobe and ran outside to see what had happened, and ran into the most beautiful morning I’ve seen for a long while. The air was cool, a breeze was blowing, the birds were singing loudly, and there was no one out but me. Hmmmm. I went back inside and quickly realized we had no power. Oh no. Not again. Pleeeeeeeeeease. I MUST put the number to our power company on speed dial!
Finding the phone book in the dark wasn’t an easy thing. My house is older, so most of the large windows are on the back side, which makes my house quite dark. I finally gave up, not finding the phone book, and called 411 on my cell, which will automatically connect me to the number.
I told myself this was THE perfect morning to treat myself to a cup of coffee and a morning devotional outdoors, serenaded by the birds. Rats. I can’t make coffee without electricity.
A poor squirrel had ventured where he didn’t belong, ending his short life. The power was back on again in about an hour and a half. Unfortunately, the transformer is in the back yard of our next door neighbor, almost where our fences connect. The poor critter ended up in my back yard. I tried to flag down the utility crew before they left, but missed them. Were they going to call animal control? Or was it our duty to dispose of the “body”? Hubby and I left to go get breakfast and assumed the squirrel would be gone when we got back from breakfast and shopping. Not.
I walked into the house and realized the clocks were flashing again. And, my touch lamp was on. I very specifically remember turning it off before I left. Oh, well. I went outside to see if the squirrel was gone and got quite a surprise. Next to the squirrel’s poor body was another dead squirrel. What???? My husband had gone next door to talk to our other neighbor. I walked over and told them we had yet another dead squirrel. Our neighbor said the utility company had been back out while we were gone. I guess it happened again! Now we had 2 bodies to dispose of. (This neighbor never lost power!)
I called animal control who is supposed to come get them. However, it is Saturday, almost 4:00, and no one has come yet. I’m sure glad we aren’t having Easter festivities here tomorrow!
As I am finishing this, animal control showed up. He said it must have been a “shocking” experience. Har har. Now I’ve seen it all. Body bags for squirrels.
Last fall we were treated to an amazing show as the transformer had to be replaced. We were without power for about 6 hours. We just pulled up the swing, pulled out the lawn chairs, and several neighbors came over for the show. It was drama in real life as the crew had to remove our neighbor’s gate and back their huge truck between the fence and the house without tearing down either. Then, the truck with the huge new transformer had to do the same thing. We had a bird’s eye view of the progress and witnessed one of the crew nearly fall down the pole. Of course, he was unharnessed. It was no easy job as was confirmed by all the cursing coming from the other side of the fence.
We have had several power problems in the last 6 months. The emergency number goes in my speed dial TODAY!

Goodness!!!! I would keep it on speed dial to!
